True Orthodontic Emergencies

Call us immediately or seek emergency medical care:

  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Trauma to face/mouth/teeth
  • Infection signs
  • Swallowed or aspirated appliance piece
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Wire embedded in cheek/gums

Common Urgent Issues

Can usually wait until office hours:
  • Broken bracket
  • Poking wire
  • Lost elastic
  • Aligner lost or broken
  • Minor discomfort
  • Lost separator

Temporary Relief: Use orthodontic wax on any poking areas. Call us during business hours for an appointment.

Temporary Solutions at Home

Orthodontic Expansion

Use orthodontic wax
Gently push wire with eraser end of pencil
Cover with wax until you can visit
Cut wire with Dr. Haeger's permission and instruction

Loose Bracket

Leave bracket in place if still on wire
Cover with wax if irritating
Call to schedule repair
Continue wearing rubber bands if applicable

Discomfort After Adjustment

Normal and temporary
Over-the-counter pain relief
Soft foods for 24-48 hours
Warm salt water rinse
Will subside in few days

Lost Aligner

Move to previous aligner if recently changed
Call office for replacement
Don't skip to next aligner
May need to order replacement

Broken Elastics

Replace immediately with new ones
Always carry extras
Call if running low
Don't skip wearing them
