Orthodontics for Kids
Starting orthodontic care at the right time sets your child up for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles. Many children so not need any orthodontic intervention until they are older, but seeing children starting at age 7 allows us to monitor their growth and development.
When to Start Orthodontic Care
(Phase 1 - Early Interceptive Care)
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
At Haeger Orthodontics, we believe that the best time to guide a healthy smile is while your child is still growing. Phase 1 treatment, also known as early interceptive orthodontics, typically begins between ages 6 and 10, when a mix of baby and permanent teeth are present.
This proactive approach allows us to identify and address developing issues before they become more complex. By guiding jaw growth and creating space for incoming permanent teeth, Phase 1 treatment can help reduce the need for more extensive orthodontic care later on.

Age 7 Evaluation
By age 7, enough permanent teeth have erupted to identify potential problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth.

Why Early Evaluation Matters
Early detection allows us to monitor growth and intervene at the ideal time, potentially avoiding more complex treatment later.

Not All Kids Need Treatment
An evaluation doesn't mean immediate treatment. Many children simply need monitoring as they grow and develop.

Monitoring vs. Active Treatment
We'll determine if your child needs treatment now, later, or just regular monitoring to ensure healthy development.

Growth & Development
We consider your child's unique growth patterns to recommend the optimal timing for any needed treatment.

Benefits of Early Treatment
Guide Jaw Growth
Influence jaw development while your child is still growing to create proper alignment and facial balance.
Create Space
Make room for permanent teeth to erupt properly, reducing the likelihood of crowding and impaction.
Improve Bite Function
Correct bite problems early to improve chewing efficiency and reduce wear on developing teeth.
Reduce Injury Risk
Address protruding front teeth to decrease the risk of trauma from falls or sports accidents.
Shorter Treatment Later
Early intervention often means simpler, shorter treatment during the teen years if needed at all.
Prevent Complex Issues
Stop small problems from becoming bigger ones, avoiding the need for extractions or surgery later.

Build Confidence
Help your child develop self-esteem with a healthy, beautiful smile during crucial developmental years. A confident smile can positively impact social interactions and academic success.
